SAMS® Accredited Marine Surveyor AMS® #1440 SAMS® — Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors® sets a demanding standard for becoming and remaining an Accredited Marine Surveyor (AMS®). It is not simply a membership that someone buys and then uses as a title. To qualify as an AMS®, SAMS requires the surveyor to be actively practicing and to have at least five years of surveying experience within the previous ten years in the field for which they are seeking accreditation. The applicant must also agree to follow SAMS’ bylaws, standards, official decisions, and Code of Ethics, and must successfully complete a written examination in the chosen area of accreditation. The testing is intended to evaluate more than basic boat knowledge. SAMS has described its Yacht & Small Craft AMS examination as a comprehensive test of general marine knowledge, including familiarity with U.S. Coast Guard regulations, ABYC standards, NFPA standards, electrical systems, corrosion, safety systems, and equipment.
